In 1998, the inception of the Conference at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus started with panel discussions with leading actresses and filmmakers gathered in the Spike Lee Room focusing around the theme, "Beyond Waiting to Exhale: A Portrait of African-American Women."

The first panel, Exhale Club, united seasoned actresses from television and film such as Grace Garland, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Tamara Tunie, and PaSean Wilson. They discussed the obstacles in the acting field facing them today. As reported by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), there is a staggering low 15% of working African American actresses, comparatively to non-African-American, 79%, that are working in the film and television industry.
